Team Obama: Young, hot and sexy with Aniston, Stiller, Clooney...Team Clinton, not so much
By Tom Tapp
Jennifer Aniston loves Barack Obama. So do Ben Stiller, Tom Hanks and Eddie Murphy.
According to Washington, D.C. bible The Hill, Obama has a much bigger contingent of celebrity donors than Hillary Clinton. The list also includes Tobey Maguire and Ed Norton. (George Clooney told the Los Angeles Times he's on Team Obama, as well.)
Judging from The Hill's report, Obama's Hollywood faithful tend to be much younger than Clinton's crew, which includes Candice Bergen, Christine Lahti and Barbra Streisand.
The celebrities appear on the list because they've donated money.
Of course, celebrity support may not mean much when it comes down to votes.
In 2000, Al Gore had arguably more celeb stumpers than any presidential candidate in history. At his final election night rally in Miami Beach alone, I remember Ben Affleck, Robert DeNiro and Stevie Wonder, among others. That show of support didn't swing the all-important Florida polls.
George Bush had the backing of Bo Derek and Wayne Newton.
In some instances, celeb support may actually work against a candidate. George Clooney did not camapign in support of his father Nick's Kentucky congressional run.
"It became an issue of Hollywood versus the heartland," Clooney told LAT. "I believed I could only do him more harm."
Whatever the case, with the success of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Ronald Reagan and Fred Thompson, the lines between real and on screen politics have become blurred.
Certainly celebrity generates media attention. And some associations can't hurt.
Both Dennis Haysbert, who played the president on Fox's "24," and Morgan Freeman, who played the president in "Deep Impact," support Obama in his run for the office.
Meanwhile, Dennis Kucinich must be thankful for the support of Mark Ruffalo, his only celebrity endorser.
