'Ugly Betty' cancelled; show to end run in April (TAF, VAR)

By Nancy Tartaglione

ABC yesterday informed the producers of "Ugly Betty" that the show's current fourth season will be its last. The network also trimmed "Betty's" episode order from 22 to 20, The Ausiello Files blog reported. The show will end its run in April.

The timing should allow the show enough time to craft a satisfying series finale, Ausiello notes. Exec producer Silvio Horta and ABC president Steve McPherson confirmed as much in this joint statement: "We've mutually come to the difficult decision to make this Ugly Betty's final season, and are announcing now as we want to allow the show ample time to write a satisfying conclusion. We are extremely proud of this groundbreaking series, and felt it was important to give the fans a proper farewell."

"Betty's" season to date has averaged a 1.7 rating/5 share among adults 18-49, as well as 5.3 million viewers. That's down from last year, when the show ended the season with a 2.6/7 in the demo and 8.1 million viewers overall, Variety notes.
