Crowe to star in 'Star is Born'? (LAT)
By Nancy Tartaglione
A couple of weeks ago, Deadline.com reported that Nick Cassavetes was in early talks with Warner Bros. to direct an updated version of "A Star is Born." The Los Angeles Times now reports that Russell Crowe has emerged as the front-runner to take the lead role of an aging, alcoholic musician who mentors/is schooled by - and then finds romance with -a younger female star.
The LAT says there is not yet a formal offer but the studio is said to be very keen on Crowe who, in turn, is also keen to take on the role previously played by Frederic March, James Mason and Kris Kristofferson.
The female part, previously inhabited by Janey Gaynor, Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand, would likely be played by Beyonce, the LAT notes.
The reboot of the drama has spent years in development with various writers before getting a new boost with a draft from young screenwriter Will Fetters.
Jon Peters, Basel Iwanyk and Billy Gerber are producing.
