Cannes lineup announced (HWT)
By Nancy Tartaglione
Thierry Fremaux, director of the Cannes Film Festival, announced the lineup for this year's event at a press conference in Paris on Thursday morning. As already confirmed by the festival, and tipped by Wiretap in March, Ridley Scott's "Robin Hood" will have opening night duties while Oliver Stone's "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps" has scored an out-of-competition berth.
There are 16 competition titles for the moment, although Fremaux said he would be adding more films in the coming days. The better-known filmmakers making return appearances in the competition include Mike Leigh ("Another Year"), Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu ("Biutiful"), Bertrand Tavernier ("La Princesse De Montpensier"), Abbas Kiarostami ("Copie Conforme") and Takeshi Kitano ("Outrage").
Doug Liman has scored a spot for "Fair Game" about former CIA agent Valerie Plame and starring Sean Penn and Naomi Watts. Fremaux noted that he was especially pleased to have the film in the selection.
Also making the jump to the main competition is wunderkind Xavier Dolan ("Les Amours Imaginaires") who last year swept Directors' Fortnight with his "I Killed My Mother."
Along with "Wall Street," Stephen Frears is showing "Tamara Drewe" out of competition while Woody Allen's "You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger" will also screen.
Midnight screenings include Gregg Araki's "Kaboom" and special screenings include the directorial debut of Diego Luna ("Abel") and a film from yet another Fiennes family member, Sophie, with "Over Your Cities Grass Will Grow."
On the main jury, Tim Burton will be joined by Kate Beckinsale, Benicio Del Toro, Shekhar Kapur, Victor Erice, Emmanuel Carrere, Alberto Barbera and Giovanna Mezzogiorno.
