HBO picks up Gibney's 'Al Qaeda' (HWT)

By Nancy Tartaglione

HBO Documentary Films has acquired domestic TV rights to "My Trip to Al Qaeda," a feature-length documentary directed by Oscar-winner Alex Gibney.

A collaboration between Gibney and Pulitzer-Prize winning author and journalist Lawrence Wright, the film brings Wright's acclaimed one-man play to the screen and was developed from his best-selling book "The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11".

The deal was negotiated by Cinetic Media's John Sloss with HBO. This is HBO's second collaboration with Alex Gibney, following "Taxi to the Dark Side."

"My Trip to Al Qaeda" will debut on HBO in fall 2010 and is a 2010 Tribeca Film Festival selection.
