New paparazzi law could impose big fines, jail time (THRE, DH, TW)
By Nancy Tartaglione
California's state Assembly on Tuesday approved a new bill that will impose strict penalties on reckless paparazzi including fines up to $5,000 and a potential year in prison. Governor Schwarzenegger is now expected to sign the bill into law.
The move follows a bill Schwarzenegger signed last year that fines photogs who invade a celebrity's right to privacy and targets media outlets that purchase the photos.
The current bill is intended to rein in paps who break traffic laws in pursuit of a photo. Notably, it was passed by the legislature on the 13th anniversary of the death of Princess Diana who passed away from injuries sustained in Paris where her car crashed as it was being pursued by paparazzi.
