Toronto roundup: Last-minute deals, Oscar contenders (THR, LAT, TW, DH, TIME)

By Nancy Tartaglione

As Toronto wrapped over the weekend, a flurry of activity saw several more US deals for premiering pics. Among them, Focus took Mike Mills' father-and-son tale "Beginners"; Image Entertainment picked up Mitch Glazer's "Passion Play," starring Mickey Rourke and Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions joined forces to pick up the Will Ferrell drama "Everything Must Go."

IFC Films took its third film of the festival with "Peep World" and Oscilloscope opted for Kelly Reichardt's "Meek's Cutoff," starring Michelle Williams and Bruce Greenwood, and Jalmari Helander's "Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale."

For The Los Angeles Times, Toronto this year harkened back to 2008 when Danny Boyle and Darren Aronofsky went to the festival with unknown commodities and emerged with awards-season favorites.

Boyle's "127 Hours" and Aronofsky's "Black Swan" both have "loads of goodwill and front-runner status," says the LAT.

Meanwhile, with "The King's Speech" taking home accolades on Sunday, the Weinstein Co. may now face an extra layer of drama: "Speech" will be pitted against "Social Network" and its producer, Scott Rudin. Back in 2008, Rudin and the Weinsteins famously and publicly tussled over the awards-season status of "The Reader." Rudin ultimately walked away from that picture.

The Wrap, here, chimes in with its 10 key moments and lessons from TIFF '10 (including the results of Roger Ebert's Tweet-Off).
