YouTube to launch movie streaming service in Europe ahead of US? (NYP)
By Nancy Tartaglione
According to The New York Post, YouTube is eyeing the launch of an unlimited movie subscription service overseas before bringing it to the US. YouTube's owner Google is said to have been in talks with the Hollywood studios for months and would launch the streaming service first in the UK and Europe before expanding to the US.
Per The Post, should the plan move forward, it would pit YouTube against Amazon -- which recently acquired the UK streaming movie service LoveFilm -- as well as Netflix which is considering a UK launch.
"Google is going to be launching channels in Europe and will launch a subscription video-on-demand service," a Hollywood exec told The Post. "They are going to spend $100 million on content."
Robert Kyncl is said to be leading the charge for Google.
