Jackman, Bettany to 'Les Miz'? (VAR, DH)

By Nancy Tartaglione

On Wednesday, Variety reported that Hugh Jackman is in talks for a lead role in Oscar-winner Tom Hooper's take on "Les Miserables." Jackman would play Jean Valjean in the Universal film. However, Deadline noted an offer has not been made and talks are not yet underway. Still, Jackman would be a perfect fit given his Broadway musical experience.

Variety notes that Jackman's natural range is a match for the tenor part of Valjean, the former prisoner who tries to escape his past and ensure his charge's future during the French Revolution while he is constantly pursued by nemesis, Inspector Javert.

Deadline also reported that Paul Bettany is a candidate for the somewhat tragic part of Javert. Per Deadline, he has read for the role and sung the songs.

Cameron Mackintosh is producing along with Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner through Working Title. Composer Claude-Michel Schoenberg's original score will be utilized.

William Nicholson wrote the script based on the musical which itself is based on the classic Victor Hugo novel.
