Deadline reported Thursday that Luke Evans will take on the role of Bard in Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit," which is currently filming in New Zealand. Deadline also confirmed rumors that sprung up in late May that Benedict Cumberbatch had boarded the film as well.

Bard the Grim, one of the last major parts to be cast, is a skilled archer, and the heir of King Girion of Dale. The king was killed by the talking dragon Smaug, Deadline notes. Cumberbatch will voice Smaug via motion capture.

Martin Freeman, who is playing Bilbo Baggins, accidentally let the news slip to a BBC Entertainment reporter that Cumberbatch was on the picture in May.
