Ben Stiller is in talks to direct "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" at 20th Century Fox, it was reported Tuesday. Back in April, Deadline reported that Stiller was in talks to play the title role. Steve Conrad is writing the script with Samuel Goldwyn Jr. and John Goldwyn producing.
The project is a reimagining of the 1947 comedy starring Danny Kaye, which was based on a short story by James Thurber about a day-dreaming book editor who who imagines all sorts exciting lives for himself.
The long-gestating project, as Variety notes, has had many rumored attachments throughout the past few years, including Ron Howard, Steven Spielberg and Gore Verbinski as directors. Mike Myers and Jim Carrey were also mentioned as stars.
Fox is targeting a January 2012 start date, according to Twitch Film - right after Stiller finishes up his starring bit in "Neighborhood Watch."
