Renee Zellweger's 'Cinnamon Girl' lands at Lifetime (DH, TLF, VAR)
By Nancy Tartaglione-Moore
Renee Zellweger is executive producing a drama series for Lifetime loosely based on her journey from small-town Texas to Hollywood stardom, the network announced Wednesday.
"Cinnamon Girl" is to be set in the LA of the late 60s/early 70s following four young women who are coming of age at the crossroads of the political, artistic, social and sexual rebellions of the time.
Zellweger will exec produce with co-creator Anthony Tambakis and Gavin O'Connor. She will also co-write the story alongside Tambakis, who will pen the script. O'Connor will direct the pilot. Danny Bramson will serve as producer and music supervisor, according to reports.
Deadline notes the genesis of the idea for the project is a combination of Zellweger's real-life journey and Tambakis' lifelong fascination with both the Laurel Canyon music scene and the New Hollywood, auteur-driven era that began in the late 60s.
Lifetime chief Nancy Dubuc called the project "a game-changer for our network and exactly the type of show we want to deliver."
