Virtual marketplace: Brightcove to launch today (WSJ)
By Nancy Vialatte
A new online video marketplace will be launched today by Barry Dillers IAC and America Online. Brightcove will allow movie, TV show and video rights holders an Internet-based forum in which to negotiate distribution deals with web site owners.
The Wall Street Journal reports that the Brightcove Network has been testing for months and counts such companies as Reuters, MTV Networks and Dow Jones among its users. From today, any media company or professional video-content owner will be able to launch a Web video channel at Brightcove. Web sites looking for video can then see what is available at the Brightcove marketplace. The content owner, Brightcove and the Web sites would then share revenue generated from ad sales and sales of the videos.
On the heels of the Google/YouTube deal, Brightcove is interesting to analysts who say that the sites success will be based on how video owners view it rather than making a splash with consumers, though it has little chance of catching up to the likes of YouTube.
