How a superhero landed in soapland (NYT)

By Nancy Vialatte

As reported last week, Marvel Comics and CBS' "Guiding Light" have teamed up for a special episode of the US' longest running soap in which Beth Ehlers' character Harley will find she has superpowers. The New York Times today reports that in turn, Marvel has commissioned a special eight-page comic.

'Ellen Wheeler, the executive producer of Guiding Light, said the idea for a collaboration came from another Marvel comic book milestone: the July wedding of the Black Panther and Storm, an X-Men character, whose dress was conceived by Shawn Dudley, the costume designer for Guiding Light. After that, it was simple: Lets call them to see if theres anything to talk about.'

The NYT points to the commonalities of the two genres and talks with the folks behind the project. Ehlers' Harley Davidson Cooper is a long-running character on the serial who hails from a family of slightly eccentric folks making her a prime candidate to pull off the superhero in soapland twist.
