Veiled threats: Egyptian actresses spark controversy by dressing more religiously (WSJ)
By Nancy Vialatte
In Egypt, a country that refers to itself as the Hollywood of the East, fires have been stoked recently at the choice by five actresses to don the controversial Islamic veil in both their public and private lives.
The Wall Street Journal says the actresses began sporting the veils during the holy month of Ramadam which is a big time for TV watching.
Critics of the actresses say they are shackling Egyptian art and expression with self-imposed restrictions. The actresses and their supporters say their work is being unfairly attacked. It is only natural, they say, for art to mirror Egyptian society, where many, if not most, women are veiled.
The move is reflective of Egypts shift towards conservatism. However, a debate is flaring that says the government-run channels have chosen not to air shows in which the actresses appear veiled. But, the selection committee has denied prejudice, says the WSJ.
